The Field Guide Library (FGL) is a mobile library traveling to public park sites across New York City.

FGL partners with local organizations and clubs, joining groups on nature walks in public parks providing identification resources and services to budding and experienced naturalists.

Do I need a library card to borrow from the Field Guide Library?
Yes, and membership is free! You can sign up here. You do not need to show identification or proof of residence.

Once you sign up, you will get an email with a patron ID# and instructions how to browse and place holds in our online library catalog. Once a hold is placed you can pick-up the book at our scheduled events or request a delivery within the New York metropolitan area.

How many books can I check out at a time?
You can borrow up to 2 books per household.

How long can I borrow a book?
Borrowing periods are for up to 30 days. There are no late fees or fines. We are a small collection and appreciate you returning books in a timely manner so others may use our resources.

How do I return a book or request a pick-up?
You can return books to selected park locations at our scheduled events. Times and addresses will be listed on our events page. You can also request a pick-up by emailing
